WILLIAM MORRIS *** ORNAMENTATION AND ILLUSTRATIONS FROM THE KELMSCOTT CHAUCER With an Introduction by FRIDOLF JOHNSON ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Trade Paperback; 112 pages; Size Approx. 8 1/2 X 12 1/8. Published by Dover Publications, Inc.; copyright 1973. Details : "The beauty of the Kelmscott Chaucer is now legendary, for William Morris, founder of the Kelmscott Press, lavished such meticulous craftsmanship on the production of this book, that it ranks with the greatest art books of the Renaissance. Important to the artist and connoisseur, however, is the fact that Morris included the full repertoire of designs and letters used in other Kelmscott books, plus many new motifs and illustrations produced especially for the original 1896 edition. Unfortunately, the beauty of this magnificent book is not to be enjoyed by the average collector, and is generally off-limits to the artist, designer, graphic artist and printer, because it was issued in such a limited edition (438 copies) that it has been known to bring over $15,000 at auction! This is the first inexpensive edition of the Kelmscott masterpieces. Artists need look no further. This Dover edition includes all of the Morris tail-pieces, decorative letters, borders and initials, in addition to all 87 of the woodcut illustrations by Sir Edward Burne-Jones, Morris' associate. The text is not reproduced in full, but several pages have been included to show composition and layout. Since the Kelmscott Chaucer stands as the cornerstone of modern book publishing, and represents the culmination of the Morris-led crafts movement, every artist and designer will want to have a copy. As a source book of designs, it remains surprisingly up-to-date, and is certain to provide you with a vast storehouse of ideas. To make this edition even more useful, Fridolf Johnson has written an introduction covering aspects of the Morris movement, the printing of this great book, and its importance to the history of publishing and design. New 1973 publication reproducing the illustrations of the original (1896) Kelmscott edition of The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer at 72 percent of original size. New introduction by Fridolf Johnson. Publisher's Note. 87 woodcuts by Sir Edward Burne-Jones. Numerous initials, decorative borders and ornamented pages by William Morris." (from the back of the book) A fine addition for your bookshelf! Condition : The book is showing light edge wear; there are a few light smudges on the back cover (see picture); there is a small brown stain on the fore edge of the text block (see picture); there is a small black mark on the front cover; otherwise, the book is in good condition with a firm binding and clean pages. * * * * * * * * Note: The letter/number at the end of the title line for this listing is just an inventory code for locating the book. ______________________________________ Free Domestic Economy Shipping! Packaging: We take pride in packaging our books for safe delivery, and if you check our feedback, you will see this reflected in the comments of many pleased customers. For nearly all of our books, we use a specially designed boxing system from IPS (Inovative Packaging Solutions) located in York, PA. These media shipping boxes are designed to conform to the size of the book, securing it and preventing it from bumping around during shipping. The end result is a box which provides a double thickness of cardboard covering the front and back of the book; actually almost like a box within a box. The outer layer of cardboard extends beyond the ends of the inner "box" which very efficiently protects the corners of the book from being bumped and damaged by the sometimes rough handling packages receive in transit. In addition we place the book in a plastic bag to help guard against moisture if a package is left out in the elements. Delivery: We aim to get all books shipped within 24 hours of order except on weekends. We can't control the delivery time once a book leaves our hands, but most of the time USPS is prompt in delivery, and the expected delivery time given by eBay is usually fairly accurate. Because we use media mail to keep costs down, it does take a little longer for delivery, and occasionally packages get delayed in the mail system. If for some reason your order has not arrived within the expected time frame, please get in contact with us so that we can try to help you.
